BEYOND TO PAI

The hidden way in. The legendary way home.

From$259 USD
DifficultyIntermediate — sealed mountain roads, plenty of curves
Duration2 days, 1 night

The pine forest shows up long before Pai does — eighty kilometres of road through the largest natural pine forest in Thailand. We ride straight through the middle of it: south through Hang Dong and west out of Chiang Mai on Route 1269, then the 1349 climbing to Ban Wat Chan, where the jungle thins into pine and the air turns cold and sharp. Route 1265 drops us into Pai for the night. Day two is the payoff — all 762 curves of the 1095, a geyser jetting out of the ground at Pong Duead, and the sea of mist at Huai Nam Dang if the morning plays along.

  1. Day 1
Chiang Mai → Samoeng → Ban Wat Chan → Pai

Slip south out of Chiang Mai through Hang Dong, then climb west onto Route 1269 toward Samoeng, with Mae Sap Cave right on the road to explore before it empties out. Then 80 km of Route 1349 along a pine ridge to Ban Wat Chan — Thailand's largest natural pine forest, cool enough for a jacket at midday, with Royal Project coffee at the top. Route 1265 and the 4006 carry us down the far side onto the 1095 into Pai by late afternoon. Evening free for the walking street, or an optional soak at the Tha Pai hot springs.

  2. Day 2
    Pai → Route 1095 → Chiang Mai

The famous one. We leave early for the mist at Huai Nam Dang, then settle onto Route 1095 and its 762 curves. Optional stops on the way down: the Pai Land Split, where the farmer hands out fruit and hibiscus juice; the Pong Duead geyser, hot enough to boil an egg in; the Kong Gnam viewpoint mid-corner; and Mok Fa Waterfall for a swim before the last run home. Tour ends at our base by late afternoon.
